Renovation Story: Going in Circles

Lindencraft, an Ottawa, Ontario based kitchen, bathroom and basement renovation contractor was called in to renovate Anna's (not her real name) bathroom and powder room in her condominium.  This building was one of the first set of condominiums built in the Ottawa area.  Being almost circular in shape is its unique feature.  Each unit is a pie shaped; there are no square corners in any room.

We were asked to renovate both the powder room and the main bathroom.  The powder room was located on  a landing midway between the main level  and  bedroom level where the main bathroom was locate.  We began with the powder room to ensure one functioning bathroom at a time.

Ceramic surround tile was added to the floor and baseboard. To conserve energy we also changed the  old window for an awning window manufactured by Northstar, www.northstarwindows.com.

A custom vanity manufactured by Vanico Maronyx, located in Montreal, Quebec was the feature piece of this bathroom.  It had ample storage and loads of style to bring that little extra to the room for storage.  Anna was pleased with both the increased lighting and storage in her powder room.

The renovation team at Lindencraft is well known for their understanding about light and shadows.  While the recessed lighting in the custom vanity gave great down light, the room needed  more light to compensate for the lack of natural lights during the long and cold Ottawa winter; it need a special touch.  The solution was to create some ambient light to reflect off the ceiling and down into the front of the vanity area.  This extra light source added to the warmth of this beautiful bathroom.

Solutions for special needs

We were met with two challenges while working on the second floor main bathroom.  The first was the fact that 90 degree angles were non-existent.  The second challenge was Anna's mobility issue.  We needed to consider her situation during the building period.  Anna was a partial amputee and wore a prosthetic leg.  Since the powder room was on the lower level and the main bathroom was on the bedroom level, she was faced with a challenge.  Anna’s choice was either to put her leg on in the middle of the night or hop down to the powder room without it and hope that she kept her balance and remained safe. Each of these possibilities  seemed daunting.

A simple solution was needed to make things easier for Anna  to get to the powder room during the renovation of the main bathroom.  Our simple solution was to temporarily install a sink and toilet at the end of each day during the construction period and remove them before we begin our work the next day

Luckily, we used a Caroma Caravelle one piece toilet, which allowed the renovation team to install and uninstall the toilet quickly.  The best part was seeing Anna's eyes after we showed her our solution.  We knew that her heartfelt thanks indicated her appreciation of our concern for her welfare.

Since Anna's condominium was based on a donut shape, none of the walls were square.  This posed a particular challenge when laying square tile in the main bathroom.  Our solution to solve this dilemma was to create a visual right angle so that the room would appear square.  Challenges like these are always met, in our view, with a workable solution.  One which will present itself after some deep thought.

Okra and dark brown were the colours chosen. The bathtub and toilet were white.  All of the fixtures were brushed nickel.  The tiles were from two distributors: Ceretac, and Centura.  The toilet was from.  Our plumbing fixture supplier in Ottawa for kitchen, bath fixtures and vanities is Boone/Mondeau. Dulux paint was used and the lighting was from, another well known Ottawa business.

Anna is a Lindencraft repeat customer.  A year later she called us in to renovate her main floor kitchen.  Building relationships with our clients is important to us.  Not only do we want to make the renovation suit you and your lifestyle, we want to hear from you again.  Stay tuned for our story on Anna's kitchen redesign and renovation.
